My horror movie howler sense is going off like crazy as I start to play this movie. It's probably going to be a stinker I reckon, all the actors have Eastern European names, so no stars I've heard of and one of the main sponsors/backers (I don't know what they are you know them company names that come up before the movie starts), is Jerry's Catering! They must have pumped some money in as their logo is on a speedboat they use and is focused on as the boat pulls out. Product placement? Kind-of!

Doing a bit of research this 2014 movie seems to be sometimes known as Killer Mermaid singular and sometimes plural and it also seems to be known as Mamula and also Nymph.

It actually starts off reasonably OK, like every horror should with a double death. A guy leaps into the sea seemingly enticed by what I assume is a mermaid's siren call and goes under the waves, his panicked girlfriend beseeches what looks like a fisherman for help and he kills her with an anchor through the neck, so it's not just the mermaid who is killer in this movie.

We're then introduced to 2 women Kelly & Lucy who are meeting with their old school friend Alex and his fiancé Yasmin and we have to put up with some boring catching up, getting to know you sequences. We see Kelly & Alex re-ignite a past spark behind Yasmin's back, they also spot a creepy fisherman, (who may be the killer), and make a good joke/horror reference to the "I know What You Did Last Summer" franchise. We've not seen any mermaids yet but we do see another murder, a drunk guy get's anchor hooked in mid-piss, poor fella. They meet up with Boban and they make plans to go visit an old military fortress on an island called Mamula, an old man Niko overhears their plans and warns them against going, telling of the fortress's past as a Nazi concentration camp and also speaks of the Scylla who he claims once took and ate six of his crew, although it sounds like he is quoting a poem when he says this. Is Niko the fisherman we've seen killing 2 people now? 

Needless to say in traditional horror movie fashion they ignore his warning and go to the island where they find out that the fisherman is already at the island and now they've arrived he won't let them leave, alive! He bursts their dinghy stranding them and proceeds to hunt them down. Is he the only danger on the island though or does something else lurk there?? (It's not much of a spoiler really, after all look at the title of the movie!)

Despite my initial thoughts it's not a bad movie, there is a bit of good gore, some reasonable CGI, creature make-up and the acting is not too bad but it's far from memorable, it won't make anybody's all time favourite list at all. I suppose it's a unique enough idea for a film with the cast running from a mad man with an anchor whilst also trying to resist the siren call of the flesh eating Scylla.

In Greek mythology Scylla is one of two monsters that live either side of a narrow strait, the other being Charybdis, they lived just an arrows range from each other. There is an idiom about being between Scylla & Charybdis meaning to escape or steer clear of one peril you may venture too close to the other. I kept wondering if they'd run into Charybdis in their flight from Scylla, you'll have to watch the film yourself to find out what happens.

Mark & Jessie a couple who lost their own child adopt another, Cody, who's had an unfortunate life. He lost his mother and then has been in a string of foster homes with not much success even being abandoned by one couple to fend for himself. He's a sweet kid and the couple soon take to him and he seems to be settling in nicely.

There is something a little odd though, we soon learn that he has an odd fear of sleeping, using stimulants to keep him awake. It seems that his dreams have effects in the real world, he has psychic powers or something that makes his sleeping visions manifest. When he does sleep for the 1st time it's beautiful as he dreams of butterflies much to the wonderment of Mark & Jessie. Later he dreams of Tate, the child they lost which seems like a miracle to them helping to aid them with the healing process perhaps although Mark thinks Jessie is taking advantage of Cody to see her son again causing a little friction between them.

The visions he projects soon start to take on a more sinister turn, as he has dark dreams, where his own personal nightmare, the Canker Man turn ups. Can his new family keep him safe from this terrible apparition, can they themselves survive it?

I thought this was a decent film, with an interesting premise and some nice chills, the acting and effects were good and the explanation tied it up very well at the end. It's only a 15 so don't expect it to trigger too many nightmares itself unless you are squeamish, although just because it's not super gory at all perhaps the concept of it might just makes your own dreams a little uneasy.

I was just saying in my review of Plan Z earlier today about the proliferation of zombie movies that are being made, I mentioned the difference in quality from film to film, but I forgot to talk about the different tones they have, zombie comedies are pretty popular it seems and the zombie movie phenomenon is pretty global too with this one a case in point. It's a zombie comedy from Malaysia, the KL stands for Kuala Lumpur that countries capitol. 

A group of friend's watching fireworks from a cliff top see a cute little poodle who bites one of them and he becomes patient zero. Before you know it the zombies are everywhere plaguing the group members wherever they are, working at school, trying out for a TV popstar talent competition and such like. The main protagonist is Nipis, (which translates as Skinny), he's a bit of a slacker and doesn't notice the dead around him for quite a while, even playing hockey with a team of undead!

Being a comedy and maybe because it's a foreign film the rules are a bit different , the zombies seem to react to pain more rather than just having their heads bashed in, they seem to be able to knock them out. Some of Skinny's fight scenes play out like Robert Downey Jnr's Sherlock Holmes ones where he plans out the attacks before implementing them. He gets out fought by a couple of kids he hooks up with quite a lot though. I suppose it's like Shawn of the Dead a Zom/Com/Rom a zombie comedy romance as there is a love interest for Skinny. 

I quite liked the movie, it was silly mainly, without any real belly laughs, perhaps some of the humour was lost in translation and it didn't have any scares but I didn't mind it at all. Perhaps it was just the novelty of it and if it had been in English or not from an exotic location I'd have disliked it more!

Yet another zombie movie, there are so many, I assume it's because anyone can make them almost with a bit of make-up and a few cameras. There are so many about, with greatly varying levels of budget and quality from mega-budget movies like World War Z to ones like Colin reputedly made for like £30 or something like that!! This one comes from Scotland and seems to be very much from the cheaper end of the market but you know how it can be with films sometimes you instantly think, "Oh this is worthless crap" or you think "hmmm this looks like it might be alright!" I kind of expected to think the former straight away but this actually isn't too bad. It's not mass over the top action, one guy, Craig gets the heads up about what is happening and has his Plan Z of what to do in a zombie outbreak. First off hoard some supplies and wait it out, then once the chaos dies down a bit venture out to a quiet, secluded place to set up a safe haven. He see his neighbours die but bides his time before eventually venturing out and finding another living person, Bill, who he lets into his home and tells him his plan.

There's a lot of sitting around chatting and agonising and blurry long shots of zombies, I suppose to keep the make-up budget down. It's pretty minimalist and quiet to start off with, Bill remembers back to the start of the zombie outbreak hiding in a restaurant toilet while his girlfriend and other patrons are eaten outside. There's a lot more fear and anticipation of zombies attacking rather than any actual undead action. Later on when they venture out to seek sanctuary the action hots up slightly although the story jumps forward in time suddenly which is a bit unusual, one moment they are meeting with a new person the next they are in a group surrounded and desperate.

Long story short, it's pretty low budget but it's far from the worst movie I've seen, the atmosphere of fear is quite cool and the character interaction feels real for the situation they are in. The zombie fighting sequences could have a bit more tension and gore maybe but more than likely the budget didn't stretch too far for that. I think they did a reasonable job actually, it won't be a film that will live long in the memory but it was enjoyable enough to watch at the time as they played to their strengths.

Nextflix Reviews - I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House

Lily (Ruth Wilson) is a private palliative nurse caring for an elderly patient Iris Blum (Paula Prentiss) who is in her final months and wishes to die in her own home rather than in an institution. Blum was an author in her younger days and is confused, calling Lily "Polly" which is the name of one of the characters from her most well known book, The Lady in the Walls. Whilst staying in the quiet house the nervous Lily who is timid and easily scared begins to suspect the house is haunted. She begins reading Blum's book despite knowing she is normally too scared for such things.

The book claims to have been narrated to Blum in 1960 by Polly herself a former tenant of the house who has been dead some 100 years or more and somehow I guess communicates her tale from the other side. The mystery as to what befell Polly is not cleared up in the book as Polly seems to not remember just what fate became her. This film doesn't really have any surprises in it, the only surprising thing is how could such a nervously inclined woman ever become a nurse? I swear she'd be scared by a bedpan she's so wet!

As I put this film on I quickly realised that I had watched it before sometime, it was so familiar but I guess it just wasn't that memorable at all as I had to watch it again to remind myself. I can see why it never stuck in my mind, it is so slow, it tries to create atmosphere but rather than creating any dread or feeling of foreboding or mystery the pace of it just had me pondering what to watch next. If you want scares, or any sort of horror then this probably isn't for you. If you can handle glacially slow quiet brooding but ultimately not much happening films than give it a watch. For me the most interesting facets about this movie are it's title and the fact that Paula Prentiss was 2nd lead in the original The Stepford Wives, the old classic sci-fi movie from 1975. Also the director Osgood is the son of Anthony Perkins of Psycho fame. That's just 2 films you'd probably be better off watching than this one in my opinion.

This Korean movie from 2016 is very cool, it has subtitles that some can find annoying but I would say stick with it as I found it to be really thought provoking and original. Others seem to agree as it has very good scores on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic and was nominated for and won a ton of awards. There is also a remake being spoken of already too.

In a small Korean mountain side village people are starting to die. First they are getting sick and then turning into murderers, killing their families and often themselves also. Those who don't end it themselves die soon anyway from a brutal and agonising convulsive death. Local cop Jong-goo (Kwak Do-won) is investigating what is causing the disease and deaths and superstition and distrust causes suspicion to be cast on an outsider, a Japanese man who is living in a shack in the woods.

Is it just superstition or is there any truth in it? Who is spreading the rumours? There is a mysterious woman named Moo-myeong who appears to know something but she is elusive. Jong-goo himself is getting desperate as his own daughter starts to show symptoms of the killer disease. A shaman is called upon to try and rescue her from whatever demons or evil spirits are plaguing her and paranoia is threatening to lead to the Japanese stranger getting killed. Is he responsible for or just another potential victim of whatever strange phenomenon is threatening the village.

It isn't an action packed slugfest at all there are lots of quieter moments for talking, story unfolding and getting to know the characters. When there are horror scenes though they are impactful and have a small modicum of humour in parts.

I really enjoyed this film and was left thinking over it's conclusion for quite some time after the credits had finished rolling. It's got some gore, tons of atmosphere, plenty of chills and trepidation and some great performances by all the cast especially the young girl (Kim Hwan-hee) playing Jong-goo's daughter, Hyo-jin.

My initial thoughts upon looking at this were that this would be a bit rubbish, I even switched it off after 2 minutes the 1st time I started to watch it but I eventually gave it a chance and actually really enjoyed it.

12 year old Cole Johnson is a timid pre-teen, his parents are a little overprotective, he's a tad wimpy, he gets bullied and he still has a babysitter. That last part is no bad thing though as his sitter Bee is a beautiful, vivacious and lovely young lady. She follows his love for geeky things, she's like a best friend, she sticks up for him, she believes in him and treats him like a beloved little brother almost. She is like the perfect girl and he is smitten. 

One night he sneaks out to spy on her and her friends when he is supposed to be asleep and that's when his ideas of the sort of person she is are shattered. 

She has far more sinister plans in store for him other than just looking after him and making sure he goes to bed on time. Plans that involve his blood, satanic rituals, sacrifices and demonic pacts. The rest of the night is spent with Cole battling to survive against Bee and her coven in a bloody series of confrontations. There is humour of the sick, daft kind especially in the always entertaining inventive death scenes. 

In summary a good entertaining little film, not necessarily a memorable classic but fun enough to be worth a watch, as long as you don't take your horror too seriously.

OK I am not one to slag off remakes and re-imaginings of old films just for the sake of it, I am not such a purist for the originals that I foam crazily at the mouth if anyone dares come along with a new idea on an old format but I can kind of see where this film may have pissed off those types majorly. 

So yeah this is a new idea on the classic old movie from 1985. The last dregs of humanity still linger underground, there is still a psychotic idiot in charge, the scientist faction still clash with the soldiers although the dynamic is a bit different here than in the original and there is still an experimental zombie captive, though he's called Max in this movie not Bub. He also doesn't act like any other movie zombie with the story being that he's the possible breakthrough for a vaccine cure. When he was fully alive he was a stalker, would be rapist who hounded scientist Zoe who now has him chained up so she can get his blood in order to find the cure.

The surviving human team is larger than in the original film but they are so dumb and incompetent that a zombie seems to be able to outwit them with ease. The acting is wooden, the characters are dumb as sacks and I genuinely didn't care for a single one of them. If this is the last of humanity they deserve to be rotter chow if you ask me. God damn it I'd eat the bloody idiots myself I think, the nasty psycho leader is almost the smartest out of the lot except for Max the zombie.

OK let me concentrate and think of some positives, the make up is good, the special effects and gore are pretty good, the action isn't too bad and the fact that most of the shuffling, shambling idiots die is good (although I am referring to the living as well as the dead here). The end is cheesy as hell but I am pretty damn certain it wont get a part 2 which is a blessed relief. Hmmm would a person who hasn't seen the original or even the 2008 remake like it? No, I don't think they would, the infuriating dumbness would annoy anyone I think. 

It's not too long a film and it may pass a few distracting minutes but don't expect it to either make your top 30 horror list or even to be remembered anytime in the future except for in the sentence "Hey do you remember that really crap Day of the Dead remake they made in 2018?"

Nextflix Reviews - He Never Died

Well I gotta say this is an interesting film, not what I expected and not similar to any other film I can think of, just very unique. In this film we have Jack who is an anti-social loner it seems. From the beginning of the film he comes off as being on the autistic spectrum with traits of Asperger's being mainly monosyllabic and very blunt and matter of fact in his limited interactions. I am not sure if he is having memories or audible hallucinations or just on the cusp of dreaming but you keep hearing sounds that seem to suggest a very violent history, with sounds of torment and war. Does he suffer from mental illness or is he about to have a breakdown?

He seems to spend his days sleeping, playing some bingo, going to the diner and meeting up with a guy in a carpark to buy mysterious packages from him. He gets disturbed from his routine by a daughter he never knew he had popping up in his life and also the guy he buys stuff from is in trouble with some others he owes money to who get Jack involved in their business. Without this guy to supply him with his stuff he gets a bit antsy and unpredictable which can be bad for those around him. He also has a waitress in the diner who seems inexplicably interested in him.

I don't want to give any spoilers, in fact I'd say don't read the film blurb as I think it gives away a fact of the film it'd be better to have revealed through watching. Damn even the cover of it gives it away slightly but I suppose they need something intriguing to pull the viewers in.

As well as these things going on in his life he also has a strange elderly man popping up now and again who he seems to be concerned about. Things escalate massively with the thugs and at 1st he seems to be trying to ignore them but things are forced upon him and he has to act. The whole time doing crazy stuff in an almost emotionless manner. It's a really dark, interesting, sometimes almost funny and certainly pretty unique film, I really enjoyed it but wouldn't know how to classify it exactly. Is it a horror? A thriller? An action movie? I dunno give it a watch and see what you think.

It stars Henry Rollins of Black Flag fame, he also did some solo music stuff, some other acting and some TV show presenting too as I recall. I just got into reading his bio on Wikipedia actually and he's done quite a lot of movie work, including the voices of Mad Stan in Batman Beyond, Benjamin Knox/Bonk in Batman Beyond: Return of Joker and Kilowog in Green Lantern: Emerald Knights!!

I saw this come up a while ago on Netflix and kind of pre-judged it, I thought it would be low budget, badly made rubbish but I am glad I was way off with that assessment as it's actually pretty good. OK it is daft, of course it is, the clues in the name but it's actually pretty funny with some good action and special effects. There are a few laugh out loud moments and some gross out stuff. 

So the local unpopular, cos it's soooo uncool, scout troop are off out on a camp. The scout leader gets infected early leaving just the 3 teenage boys in camp. Ben & Carter sneak out heading to a party, they are planning on quitting scouting soon anyway as they don't wanna lose their cool cred now they are getting older and want to get with girls. They only stuck around this long for their mate Augie who feels betrayed. I don't know why I bothered mentioning that who watches these comedy horrors for character story anyway? Really all you need to know is that it's 3 scouts and a cocktail waitress they meet up with running away from zombies A LOT and killing them in funny & inventive ways in an effort to stay alive.

The zombies are pretty fast and strong but seem to concentrate on throwing our heroes around more than biting them which helps. Animals are also affected by the virus too which you don't see very often in zombie films, there is one scene here that if not played for laughs would be very scary in a serious horror. They discover that the air force are going to bomb the town at 3AM and want to warn the people at the party before the zombies arrive there or the bombs get dropped on them. Lucky they have all their scout training to be prepared for the zombie apocalypse.

The world is ravaged by a pandemic outbreak that has 5 stages of progression. At the 5th stage victims become mindless murderous savages. The story begins inside a safe zone where Dr. Lauren Chase (Rachel Nichols) is receiving instructions on a mission outside the zone she is being sent on.

Two teams are sent out looking for non-infected survivors and also a possible cure. This is Lauren's 1st mission outside the safe zone with her team. She is the team doctor but her lack of experience in the field could potentially harm the group as they travel out by bus looking for non-infected people in an urban area where they encounter desperate & mostly dangerous people suffering from various stages of the infection. Chase has more than just the official mission objective on her mind though, she has her own agenda and a secret she is keeping from her team. They soon come across the other team's bus with all but one of it's crew on board dead with no sign of the last member. Then slowly but surely her team whittles down in size, losing their bus along the way. Despite that though she still ploughs on with her own mission when any sensible person would be considering only their own survival.

Also stars Alfie Allan (Theon from Game of Thrones)

Much of the film is in 1st person, shot from the helmet cams of the team members. This idea has been used in quite a few films now and can often be quite jarring with the picture shaking around and everything filmed in near total darkness but it's actually done pretty well here with some gritty & visceral fighting sequences. In some fights the perspective moves from camera to camera which also works quite effectively to convey the chaos and panic of the life or death melee. It also provides a couple of nasty point of view scenes which I thought were pretty well done.

Overall I thought this was a pretty decent movie with some good ideas and action sequences, well worth checking out I'd say if you like a bit of horror.

Why is it that tourists, adventurers, archaeologists, whoever never listen to the locals in these movies anyway? Well I suppose that is the trope isn't it, they have to ignore the locals advise about never venturing into a place or we'd have no movie at all!! It reminds me of that comedy short in the style of a horror film trailer called "Hell No!" The sensible horror movie where the protagonists don't go onto the moors or read the dark tome they've been warned against. I'll post the video here if I can find it.

The particular advise ignored in this film by 3 American tourists in Japan is to not visit a deserted mountain temple. A bookseller refuses to sell them a book about it at 1st, another person tells them it is an "unlucky" place, then when they reach the village beneath the temple in the mountains they are told what happened to a previous visitor there. He came down again holding his eyes, no not covering his eyes, holding them in his outstretched palm.

Surprise, surprise they still go anyway and the story is told within a framework where a very much worse for wear survivor of the night is explaining what happened to the Japanese authorities. The film is only 1hour & 18 minutes long and I think it takes 40 minutes to actually get to the temple. Then a few things happen in the shadows and there's some crying but it just seems to be over really quickly with out much being seen. There's what I guess is meant to be a twist of sorts but it's so obvious when it happens that I didn't even realise this was meant to be a clever reveal at all so there's no pay off at all. In summary, this isn't very scary at all, there's precious little for gore fans but at least it's short and I have seen a lot worse. There is just nothing in it to propel it into top recommendation status. Bland and unmemorable.

DVD night - Reviews for Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Leatherface and Alien: Covenant

Another movie date night with my gorgeous Mrs. She fell asleep after 10 minutes as she always does and I watched all these movies as she lightly snored and snuffled beside me on the bed. 

Kingsman: The Golden Circle was her choice and I was more than happy to watch it as we'd both thoroughly enjoyed it's predecessor. The films are based on the Kingsman comic book series by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons released in 2012 though I am sure I read a book that was very similar to this concept before as well which was very, very similar too I thought. I can't recall for the life of me what the book was called or any of the characters names from it but I was SURE it was based on it when I first saw the film. I have tried to have a google up to find it but had no joy there. 

   

Oh well, the 2nd film is another high energy, fight fest full of crazy action and far-fetched gadgets & plot scenes that see the last of the Kingsmen teaming up with members of their US counterparts the Statesmen to take on the drug cartel The Golden Circle who have poisoned their products threatening to kill anyone who has taken them and will only release the antidote if the world agrees to make them all legal! The organisation's leader has also kidnapped Elton John and seems to make a habit of getting her robot dogs to kill her failed underlings and then mincing and making them into hamburgers!! That kind of cannibalistic behaviour would help her fit right in with the protagonists of the next movie from this evening......

...Leatherface. This is not to be confused with Texas Chainsaw Massacre III which had the subtitle Leatherface and a cool Heavy Metal soundtrack, but there are so many chainsaw killing movies based in Texas now that I have totally lost track of them all! (This is #8 it seems!!) It doesn't really matter though does it, you know what you are getting when you buy or hire one of these out don't you? Well, normally I'd say yes you do but this is an origin story for this evil face wearing maniac so it's a bit different. There is still a family of wrong 'uns living on a farm in Texas somewhere and the mother who is raising her kids with very nontraditional family values has one of her boys taken away by the authourities after they kill a sheriff's daughter. There is no proof that it wasn't just an accident so there are no criminal charges instead he is put into what seems to be an asylum or at least a home for VERY maladjusted, twisted teens/young adults. I have to admit I thought that she had 2 children taken from her and Bud another character was Jedidiah's brother, the passage of time in the film and the fact I am sure there were 2 kids in the film's early sequence made me think this but Wikipedia says otherwise so I'll trust it over my own addled memory!

    

He'd been there for 10 years with his mother fighting to get back custody of him. After a bit of chaos caused by his mother a riot and a breakout ensues where he, his friend Bud (who I thought was his brother) and 2 other inmates escape, with a nurse as a hostage in tow. They are pursued by the very sheriff whose daughter they killed all them years ago and he is taking no prisoners. Along the way Leatherface is born making his deranged mother very proud I am sure!!

From a lunatic mother we move on to an alien mother!! Actually there is no alien brood queen mother in this film but there are plenty of eggs, facehuggers and a new alien that infects through mushroom like spores and emerges in splendidly horrific fashion! This, the 6th film in the Alien franchise is about the colony ship Covenant which is carrying settlers to a far off planet to make new lives there. Along the way the crew's stasis sleep is disturbed by an accident. Once awoken they discover signals from a nearby planet, seemingly human in origin they seek the planet out to investigate. Bad idea, terrible idea..... it ends badly. This movie is basically the follow up to the much reviled Prometheus from 2012 and the planet they go to investigate is the one from that movie and the android David played by Michael Fassbender is still living on the planet along with far too many alien killing machines to make it a safe place to visit. Fassbender plays 2 roles, he is David the android on the planet from the Prometheus ship that crashed there and also Walter the later version android from the Covenant. There is plenty of good action and gore and I liked it.

In fact all 3 films tonight were a hit for me :)
