I remember seeing adverts for this when it hit the cinemas and it looked pretty good to me so as soon as I saw it pop up on Netflix I watched it with my girlfriend. Set in Victorian London before the days when Jack the Ripper terrified the city there was another serial killer gripping the populace with fear and morbid fascination. They've been dubbed the Golem after the killer left a part of a Rabbi's anatomy on the page of a book in a section about the Jewish folklore creature of that name. 

Bill Nighy plays John Kildare, a vice detective moved to homicide as they are clueless, and need a scapegoat to shaft if the killer is not caught. Rumours about Kildare have damaged his reputation so he is chosen to take over the case and shoulder the blame. Assisted by local police man George Flood (Daniel Mays) they get an emphatic lead that points to the killer being one of 4 men.

This leads to another story altogether, one of the suspects John Cree has been murdered, poisoned, and the blame has been placed upon his wife Lizzie. Kildare is convinced that she killed her husband after discovering that he was the Golem and seeks to prove it so she can possibly avoid being executed once these extenuating circumstances come to light. Kildare and Flood follow through the clues, question the living suspects and through interviews with Lizzie, Kildare gets into her history finding out how she met John Cree.

This takes us into her story, from a harsh early life she manages to find a place and begins to thrive in the theatre. She meets and becomes good friends with Dan Leno a star in the music halls and is taken under his wing. John Cree is a theatre critic and aspiring playwright who becomes besotted with Lizzie. The historical story crosses over with the present day investigation as Kildare struggles to identify the killer as Lizzie's husband before she feels the cut of the hangman's noose.

I found this to be a very enjoyable movie, the actors are all excellent, the settings and plot are engrossing and there is a bit of gruesome murder too, so something for everyone. Erm... well not for kids though... obviously!

Julia, (Maika Monroe), awakens in a cell along with 2 other prisoners, all of them captured to be tested and experimented on by Alex, (Ed Skrein), a cold, enigmatic science genius who is working on perfecting artificial intelligence. Seemingly without morals or emotion, Alex has implanted devices into his captives necks that collects data from them that needs to be tested and eventually extracted, a process that will prove fatal. 

Julia manages to free herself from the cell but is still trapped in Alex's house which is full of high tech drones and a security robot that stops anyone from escaping. These are controlled by an earlier AI creation, Tau, who Alex commands to make Julia take on a series of mental tests every day when he is out of the house.

The company he works for are on a deadline and time is running out, he has only so many days to test and remove her implant. The countdown is on for her to try and escape before she dies. Her only chance of escape is to convince Tau the AI to help her. Can she find more humanity from a computer than she can from the emotionless Alex?

I don't want to give any spoilers so I'll leave this review like that, it's a good film though with a cool concept, decent script, good acting and it's well paced. There is some gore but it's more a sci-fi thriller with some good tense scenes than a horror. Can Julia convince Tau to go against it's programming and help her? What makes a person a person? 

I was surprised when looking at the cast to find that Gary Oldman voiced Tau, I certainly never recognised him.

This looks like a massive budget sci-fi adventure, I vaguely remember hearing the name of it but wasn't tempted to go see it at the cinema. I wonder if the advertising people did a good enough job pushing it. It's based on a series of French science fiction comics called Valerian and Laureline which I have not heard of previously. Apparently producer Luc Besson has been wanting to make this movie for years even considering it way back in 1997 when he was working on The Fifth Element.

As the film starts we see the scope of the civilisations involved in the story during a starting sequence where we see beings from many species greeting and shaking hands with each other as they create a massive, planet sized space base, Alpha Station in the Earth's orbit. Eventually they become a danger to Earth so are set adrift to govern themselves. This is the City of a Thousand Planets, Valerian is a young Major in their security forces. He and his partner Sergeant Laureline start the film on a mission on a planet to capture a stolen converter, a small dragon like creature, the last of it's kind, that appears to poop out multiple replicas of whatever it eats! It is being sold on the black market by some previous residents of the planet Mül which was destroyed 30 years ago. We saw their homeworld get destroyed before the introduction of the title characters, an event that Valerian either dreamed or received a psychic flash about. He recognises them from his dream but when the mission goes pear-shaped he has to get out quickly before he can question them.

After a narrow escape they arrive back on Alpha Base to be faced with two threats, firstly a strange techno cancer has infected the base threatening to destroy it and secondly ruthless forces want the last converter and will go to extreme lengths to get it. The two appear to be connected as a group of Mül show up and kidnap the commander.

There are mysteries and intrigue around what happened to the Mül planet and what they are after that gets the partners into a lot of scrapes during the course of this 2 hour 20 minute movie.

The real star of this movie is the special effects and the imagination at work to create the many creatures and areas of the ship that we see. There are some scenes that almost leave you agog at the amount of detail that went into them. The early mission scene for example is in a kind of virtual reality market place so we see a fight/escape scene that exists in seemingly 2 different dimensions at once. Another seen sees a chase through Alpha Base that passes through a number of regions all vastly different to each other. This movie had a massive budget and it shows, although it apparently ended up a bit of a box office failure so I'm not sure if they'll ever be any sequels.

The action is top-notch and the story is passable, the only negative points is that the characters are perhaps a tad flat and lacking charisma, it's definitely worth a look just for the cool visuals.

I think this is the full-length version of a short film that was doing the rounds, being shared on Facebook a while back. It starts out with a couple Andy & Kay and their baby living in a house boat on the river in Australia. They are scavenging for supplies as they go with their only interaction with other people being when they float past a family who pull a gun and eye them warily. 

This is a zombie movie, they've done the escape to somewhere remote part already before the film starts and have it relatively safe now, but maybe they got too comfortable and complacent and disaster strikes. Something bites Kay and she has 48 hours before she turns, Andy desperately tries to get her to a hospital but things go from bad to worse. Andy is now left alone and is himself infected, he desperately has to seek a way to get his daughter Rosie to safety before he turns. 

He meets other people along the way, all eking out an existence in a pretty barren remote rural landscape. There are zombies around but not enough at 1st to seem like a major problem, Andy has to be more wary of the living as some may have a shoot the bitten on sight policy. He is advised by a school teacher to leave Rosie with a mob of aboriginal people who have deserted the towns to go back to the old ways, away from the sickness that has overtaken civilisation.

As so often happens in these movies the living often prove to be as big a threat as the dead, with Andy having to avoid both on occasions whilst also trying to fight off his descent into zombiedom! It's a countdown all the way, can he find a safe haven for his child before he decides to have her for lunch? He does find an ally along the way, Thoomi an aboriginal girl and they have to learn to trust and help each other to get by.

This stars Martin Freeman of Sherlock, Hobbit and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy fame in the sort of role that I wouldn't expect to see him in, mind you he's in that film Ghost Stories too which is meant to be pretty scary and it's definitely on my one to watch list.

This film is a good story, but it doesn't really feel like that much of a horror, the zombies hardly ever get close enough to be that perilous it seems. The tension doesn't get ramped up as high as I imagined it would be either, I imagined Andy would be struggling hard with not eating Rosie but he never even gets close to it. Overall a cool enough movie but I think it missed a trick or two along the way.

My horror movie howler sense is going off like crazy as I start to play this movie. It's probably going to be a stinker I reckon, all the actors have Eastern European names, so no stars I've heard of and one of the main sponsors/backers (I don't know what they are you know them company names that come up before the movie starts), is Jerry's Catering! They must have pumped some money in as their logo is on a speedboat they use and is focused on as the boat pulls out. Product placement? Kind-of!

Doing a bit of research this 2014 movie seems to be sometimes known as Killer Mermaid singular and sometimes plural and it also seems to be known as Mamula and also Nymph.

It actually starts off reasonably OK, like every horror should with a double death. A guy leaps into the sea seemingly enticed by what I assume is a mermaid's siren call and goes under the waves, his panicked girlfriend beseeches what looks like a fisherman for help and he kills her with an anchor through the neck, so it's not just the mermaid who is killer in this movie.

We're then introduced to 2 women Kelly & Lucy who are meeting with their old school friend Alex and his fiancé Yasmin and we have to put up with some boring catching up, getting to know you sequences. We see Kelly & Alex re-ignite a past spark behind Yasmin's back, they also spot a creepy fisherman, (who may be the killer), and make a good joke/horror reference to the "I know What You Did Last Summer" franchise. We've not seen any mermaids yet but we do see another murder, a drunk guy get's anchor hooked in mid-piss, poor fella. They meet up with Boban and they make plans to go visit an old military fortress on an island called Mamula, an old man Niko overhears their plans and warns them against going, telling of the fortress's past as a Nazi concentration camp and also speaks of the Scylla who he claims once took and ate six of his crew, although it sounds like he is quoting a poem when he says this. Is Niko the fisherman we've seen killing 2 people now? 

Needless to say in traditional horror movie fashion they ignore his warning and go to the island where they find out that the fisherman is already at the island and now they've arrived he won't let them leave, alive! He bursts their dinghy stranding them and proceeds to hunt them down. Is he the only danger on the island though or does something else lurk there?? (It's not much of a spoiler really, after all look at the title of the movie!)

Despite my initial thoughts it's not a bad movie, there is a bit of good gore, some reasonable CGI, creature make-up and the acting is not too bad but it's far from memorable, it won't make anybody's all time favourite list at all. I suppose it's a unique enough idea for a film with the cast running from a mad man with an anchor whilst also trying to resist the siren call of the flesh eating Scylla.

In Greek mythology Scylla is one of two monsters that live either side of a narrow strait, the other being Charybdis, they lived just an arrows range from each other. There is an idiom about being between Scylla & Charybdis meaning to escape or steer clear of one peril you may venture too close to the other. I kept wondering if they'd run into Charybdis in their flight from Scylla, you'll have to watch the film yourself to find out what happens.

Movie Review - Vixen (The Movie)

Vixen was created by Gerry Conway and Bob Oksner and debuted in July 1981 in Action Comics #521. As I mentioned in my video I didn't think she'd ever had her own run of books. It was intended to give her a series at one point when she 1st emerged but it was forced to be cancelled. 

She has featured primarily in team books such as The Justice League and The Suicide Squad. I can't recall her from Suicide Squad at all but it seems she joined them initially to get revenge on a murderous smuggler then when she was struggling to control her animal side she stayed on a more long term basis, she also had a romance with the Bronze Tiger, (a long time squad member), for a time.

In 2008 she had a 5-issue mini-series called Vixen: Return of the Lion which chronicles her 1st return to her home village where she confronts the warlord who killed her mother and has since taken over several Zambesi villages.

I did a bit of research now on this and found that indeed this DVD is made up of 2 season's of a web series that streamed on CW's online viewing platform with 15 minutes of added footage and a couple of her appearances from Justice League Unlimited and a featurette as added DVD extras. Each season ran for 6 episodes of 4 - 7 minutes in length which you think might make it seem a bit jumbled being compressed together on one DVD as a full length film but it works fine I think.

It is set in the Arrowverse which is the name given to the DC TV shows continuity which air on the CW network. The original cast members of The Arrow & Flash TV shows turn up many times in the cartoon and are voiced by the actors who portray them in the live action versions. So we see guest star outings from Flash, Arrow, Felicity, Cisco, Atom & Black Canary. Also as I am not at all caught up on the live action franchises I did not know that Mari McCabe/Vixen has also got a live action version, played by Megalyn Echikunwoke, (who also provides her voice for this film),  she looks very much ideal for the part going by this picture of her.

She has so far only appeared in 1 episode from Arrow season 4 but an ancestor of the character was played by Maisie Richardson-Sellers in season 2 of Legends of Tomorrow. I must have seen that I am sure but forgotten about it as Mr Memory is NOT my superhero name!!

Another bonus with the DVD is that it comes with a digital download on Ultraviolet so you can watch it on your devices on the go. I've got quite a catalogue of Super films on my Flixster account now, I just wish they all came with that option.

Quantum-Palaeontologist Dr. Rick Marshall, (Will Ferrell), plans to use time warps to solve the energy crisis by travelling to alternate worlds to get their fossil fuels and is ostracized by his peers as a crackpot reduced to teaching unruly schoolkids. He is approached at work by Holly Cantrell, (Anna Friel), who offers convincing proof of his theory's validity which prompts him to finish his "tachyon amplifier". They test the machine in a tachyon rich environment at a run down roadside theme park inside a ride called Devil's Canyon Mystery Cave and transport themselves and the ride operator Will Stanton (Danny McBride), to the Land of The Lost.

So this film is from 2009 I never realised it was so old actually, it's based on the old 1974 serial of the same name. I must admit to being vaguely aware of this movie but I never sought it out as I never watched the original series at all and I am also not a massive fan of Ferrell's movies either.  looking at the reviews of this it was pretty well panned by critics and was nominated for 8 Golden Raspberry Awards winning just the one for Worst Remake.

As comedies go it is pretty dire actually, they manage to get pretty much no laughs out of the situation whatsoever, much of the humour is daft or just plain silly and there are a couple of sex jokes too that seem incongruous in a 12 certificate. As a fantasy/Sci-fi adventure it's pretty weak too, there's peril and running but there's no sense of danger or tension ever.

So in summary, this got panned and it really does deserve it as an action/adventure/comedy it fails to have any of those 3 elements notably within it. The only redeeming feature is the lovely Anna Friel, aww she's so cute, like Lara Croft crossed with Pippi Longstocking.

3 slackers, Alexxx, Darren & Joel, with airhead ideas but big dreams work as cleaners in a hotel. They get overtime for the evening in the hotel roof bar to cater at the party of a massive millionaire internet celebrity Bae Awadi and use the chance to pitch their idea for an interactive VR gaming suit to him. Things are looking good, Bae likes the idea and orders a cheque written. It's just a shame that a gang of criminals choose this evening to strike, intent in extorting Bae's father's cash. Things go awry and it ends up being a hostage situation but the trio manage to evade capture and set about taking back the building and claiming their investment.

The trio of protagonists are played by Adam DeVine, Anders Holm and Blake Anderson respectively and apparently are all from a comedy show called Workaholics? I've never heard of it at all, so either it never came to the UK or it just went under my radar. This film was cool for a quick late night mindless viewing but I'm not sure I'd bother seeking out the cast's previous work though.

The humour is pretty vulgar and gross out and very silly too and the trio aren't exactly loveable but I actually quite enjoyed the film. It certainly won't make my top film list ever but it had enough laughs and gross out groans to make me think that I hadn't totally wasted my 101 minutes. It's been very badly reviewed on sites like Rotten Tomatoes with a 9% approval rating but I'd say watch it for yourselves and judge it. Personally I thought it had some good unique ideas for some of the situations and some of the violent scenes were surprisingly dark I thought.

I wanted to say that it's like Die Hard mixed with.. but then I couldn't think of a gross-out, daft comedy to compare it to and I'm not sure if it's because I haven't watched enough modern comedies to find a comparison or if it's just unique. I suspect it's the former.

I did a little research into the actors backgrounds to see if I'd seen them on anything previously and found that DeVine was the voice of The Flash in The Lego Batman Movie and Anderson has a small part in Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse which I reviewed recently HERE.

Film Review - Wonder Woman

I am a sucker for a superhero movie and especially those with DC comics characters as I am a big DC fan. I won't disparage any Marvel movies cos they've all been pretty decent but it annoys me all these Marvel fans that slag off the DC movies. They have a different focus with their films, more serious, not trying to be buddy movies and comedies. I was really hopeful that Wonder Woman would be a success, otherwise all the DC naysayers would've jumped on it as they always do. So I went to see this at the cinema with high hopes and I was not disappointed and in fact I was pretty delighted as this film got practically universal appraise. So now I have it on DVD too as I have to keep my super-film collection as up to date as I can 👸 (I was looking for a smiley and this one looks a bit like Wonder Woman)

As mentioned before in my Wonder Woman blog Diana and her tribe of warrior woman, The Amazons live on Themyscira. She is born of magic, the youngest person on the island, shaped from clay by her mother Hippolyta and brought to life by a thunder bolt from Zeus. It is her destiny to battle the evil god of war Aries if he ever returns as he is expected to do some day. Isolated on their island though they do not realise that war has encompassed the world of man beyond their magically hidden borders. They are alerted soon enough when Steve Trevor, an american spy working for the British crash lands into the sea. Diana rescues him just in time for boatloads of pursuing Germans to emerge through the magical island obscuring fog. After a battle where some Amazons die and the Germans are all eliminated they question Trevor and Diana becomes convinced that Aries is abroad in man's world and is determined that it is her duty to go out and put a stop to him.

So Dianna accompanies Steve to man's world during the end days of WWI, the armistice is due to be declared but General Ludendorff who she determines to be Ares and his scientist Dr. Maru have plans to prolong the war and even perhaps win it with the creation of a new terrible poison gas weapon. 

There's plenty of action and a dash of humour as Dianna is out of her element and unfamiliar with the way man's world works, the role of women in this era not being like it is today, I think they'd only just got the right to vote at this point in time in the UK. As you can imagine the top brass won't listen to her and no one believes in ancient Greek gods anymore. Eventually Diana with Steve and a small team of his friends go to Europe to face the enemy head-on in some great action sequences and end up confronting Ludendorff who is planning to drop gas and Ares finally appears for an epic battle.

DVD night - Reviews for Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Leatherface and Alien: Covenant

Another movie date night with my gorgeous Mrs. She fell asleep after 10 minutes as she always does and I watched all these movies as she lightly snored and snuffled beside me on the bed. 

Kingsman: The Golden Circle was her choice and I was more than happy to watch it as we'd both thoroughly enjoyed it's predecessor. The films are based on the Kingsman comic book series by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons released in 2012 though I am sure I read a book that was very similar to this concept before as well which was very, very similar too I thought. I can't recall for the life of me what the book was called or any of the characters names from it but I was SURE it was based on it when I first saw the film. I have tried to have a google up to find it but had no joy there. 

   

Oh well, the 2nd film is another high energy, fight fest full of crazy action and far-fetched gadgets & plot scenes that see the last of the Kingsmen teaming up with members of their US counterparts the Statesmen to take on the drug cartel The Golden Circle who have poisoned their products threatening to kill anyone who has taken them and will only release the antidote if the world agrees to make them all legal! The organisation's leader has also kidnapped Elton John and seems to make a habit of getting her robot dogs to kill her failed underlings and then mincing and making them into hamburgers!! That kind of cannibalistic behaviour would help her fit right in with the protagonists of the next movie from this evening......

...Leatherface. This is not to be confused with Texas Chainsaw Massacre III which had the subtitle Leatherface and a cool Heavy Metal soundtrack, but there are so many chainsaw killing movies based in Texas now that I have totally lost track of them all! (This is #8 it seems!!) It doesn't really matter though does it, you know what you are getting when you buy or hire one of these out don't you? Well, normally I'd say yes you do but this is an origin story for this evil face wearing maniac so it's a bit different. There is still a family of wrong 'uns living on a farm in Texas somewhere and the mother who is raising her kids with very nontraditional family values has one of her boys taken away by the authourities after they kill a sheriff's daughter. There is no proof that it wasn't just an accident so there are no criminal charges instead he is put into what seems to be an asylum or at least a home for VERY maladjusted, twisted teens/young adults. I have to admit I thought that she had 2 children taken from her and Bud another character was Jedidiah's brother, the passage of time in the film and the fact I am sure there were 2 kids in the film's early sequence made me think this but Wikipedia says otherwise so I'll trust it over my own addled memory!

    

He'd been there for 10 years with his mother fighting to get back custody of him. After a bit of chaos caused by his mother a riot and a breakout ensues where he, his friend Bud (who I thought was his brother) and 2 other inmates escape, with a nurse as a hostage in tow. They are pursued by the very sheriff whose daughter they killed all them years ago and he is taking no prisoners. Along the way Leatherface is born making his deranged mother very proud I am sure!!

From a lunatic mother we move on to an alien mother!! Actually there is no alien brood queen mother in this film but there are plenty of eggs, facehuggers and a new alien that infects through mushroom like spores and emerges in splendidly horrific fashion! This, the 6th film in the Alien franchise is about the colony ship Covenant which is carrying settlers to a far off planet to make new lives there. Along the way the crew's stasis sleep is disturbed by an accident. Once awoken they discover signals from a nearby planet, seemingly human in origin they seek the planet out to investigate. Bad idea, terrible idea..... it ends badly. This movie is basically the follow up to the much reviled Prometheus from 2012 and the planet they go to investigate is the one from that movie and the android David played by Michael Fassbender is still living on the planet along with far too many alien killing machines to make it a safe place to visit. Fassbender plays 2 roles, he is David the android on the planet from the Prometheus ship that crashed there and also Walter the later version android from the Covenant. There is plenty of good action and gore and I liked it.

In fact all 3 films tonight were a hit for me :)

Jackie Chan has been entertaining me for decades and he's never failed to deliver the action that's for sure. I was 9 when Drunken Master came out in 1978 and I remember watching that and play kung-fuing around the house with my mates afterwards. I gotta say he is looking old now but he ain't lost it. This feels a hell of a lot grittier and real than his normally over the top outings for sure. His age adds real pathos to his acting too, you can feel his sadness at the loss of his last remaining family member and he feels believable as a devastated, quiet man seeking vengeance and the truth about the killers. He's a man with a tragic past but also a violent one with training that he hasn't forgotten. 

The Chan half of the action is just the tip of the iceberg really with the real story being multi-layered political intrigue. There is all kinds of secret phone calls and wranglings and machinations within the IRA and British government that keep the story deep and interesting. The man he has targeted to get the truth from Politician Liam Hennessey (Pierce Brosnan) seemingly doesn't actually know who did it and is himself trying to find out. Brosnan is great, his character is an ex-IRA man, now a politician dedicated to maintaining the peace accord and he wants to find the rogue cell who are breaking the peace and 'deal' with them. So Chan in his desperation seems to be attacking the wrong guy and in all honesty hindering Brosnan's chances to find the truth. There are levels within levels though and things are not simply black and white by any stretch of the imagination and there are lies and tricks and schemes interweaving with each other. 

This is a great movie, it has action it has a great story and superb acting and it's free to watch on Netflix, so get on it. And check out all Jackie's other movies too cos they are bloody great :)
Ooooooh and I just found out the director was Martin Campbell who did the 'flop' (that should never have been a flop cos it's a great movie), Green Lantern. Awesome!!

Movie review - The Ghoul

I watched this film straight after A Ghost Story and I think that movie had drained my brain through sheer boredom and that didn't really help me with getting into it.

It started with some detectives investigating a case and talking about a ghoul, some one who was obsessed with hanging around police trying to find out grisly details about police procedures and having an overactive curiosity about gory crimes. So I am thinking they are looking for this individual. The next thing we see a guy who is clinically depressed and seeing psychiatrists to talk about his delusions about being a detective. He seems to mope around a lot, he spends some time trying to connect with an old flame and follows and befriends a fellow patient who he goes to a party with. At the party they talk positing the thought that "imagine instead of being a depressed person who dreams of being a undercover detective he is actually a detective pretending to be a depressed person pretending to be a detective"................ does that sentence even make sense? That was when I twigged that this was the detective from the beginning of the movie actually being undercover. I seem to have totally missed the point somewhere along the line I think, although I feel that the point wasn't really made in any way that was in the slightest bit engaging or able to pique my interest.

It's all a bit psychedelic maybe, it's definitely obscure and I suppose it's supposed to make you think but it just made me think that I'd picked some bloody naff movies this evening. There were hints of magic mentioned and a warning given but I felt no hint of menace or inkling of there being any kind of threat or trepidation and then there was some kind of ouroboros shenanigans and was he investigating crimes he himself committed in some weird cyclical twist? To be honest I didn't care enough about the film to try and fathom it out. Immortality something or other, existential blah blah..... pretty boring stuff.
