I started today's count with
Batman: Death and the Maidens (2003 - 04)
DC = 4757
Marvel = 60
Others = 58Batman: Death and the Maidens (2003 - 04)
1 - 9
I can't say I remember this at all, so here's a synopsis torn from Goodreads -
This intense new standalone Batman graphic novel stars one of the Dark Knight's most enigmatic adversaries: Ra's Al Ghul - the featured villain in the forthcoming movie Batman Begins! 600 years old, Ra's Al Ghul has spent his existence trying to wipe out humanity. But now, with his life draining away, Ra's turns to Batman, to help save him, whether to aid his ancient namesis, Batman's decision may be wrested from him when another party enters the fray with their own terrible agenda! Written by Greg Rucka (Gotham Central), with artwork by Klaus Janson (Batman: The Dark Knight Returns), Batman: Death and the Maidens is as cerebral as it is visceral!
Catwoman Defiant (1992)
Catwoman comes to the attention of Mr Handsome and his Model Army and has to deal with their unwanted attention whilst also avoiding Batman. Handsome likes to collect and then destroy beautiful things and Catwoman is high on his list of gorgeous things to be destroyed. She is captured and tied to a statue of Venus inside a mine shaft where a beast lurks in the tunnels somewhere ready to tear her apart!!
Penguin Triumphant (1992)
Penguin enters into some shady insider stock market trading which brings him to Bruce Wayne's attention, as Batman he has to get to the root of the plot that Penguin and his partner are perpetrating!! There's also a hitman in the picture as Penguin's partner looks to steal his methods and silence all loose ends.
Batman: Jekyll & Hyde (2005)
1 - 6
Dr. Henry Jekyll and his alternative personality, Mr. Edward Hyde, are fictional characters in Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. In the great tradition of Batman meeting characters from fiction like Nevermore (Edgar Allen Poe), The Doom that Came to Gotham (H.P. Lovecraft) and the Invisible Man book I looked at last week here is him meeting up with the good doctor and his not at all good split personality. I wonder if Two-Face makes an appearance here.
Thrillkiller: Batgirl & Robin (1997)
1 - 3
This Elseworld's tale features a world in the 60's and with character roles all played out differently. Bruce is not Batman, instead Barbara Gordon lives in Wayne Manor after having bought it from a near penniless Bruce after his parents were murdered by his servants!! That is not the only change to characters in this inventive Elseworlds tale!!
Batman & the Monster Men (2006)
1 - 6
Batman and the Monster Men is written and drawn by Matt Wagner, it's the first part of his Dark Moon Rising series, the other being Batman and the Mad Monk I showed last week. It takes place sometime after Batman: Year One and Batman: The Man Who Laughs. It focuses on Batman's first encounter with his notorious old foe, Hugo Strange.
Batman: Nevermore (2003)
1 - 5
In this inventive Elseworld's tale Batman lives at the same time as Edgar Allen Poe in Baltimore in the late 1800's. The Dark Knight Detective meets up with the father of modern detective fiction Poe who created the genre with The Murders in the Rue Morgue which was 1st printed in Graham's Magazine (no relation to me) in 1841. Quoth the Batman "Nevermore"
The Batman of Arkham (2000)
Another awesome Elseworld's epic! In the 1900's by day Bruce Wayne is head psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum compassionatley trying to cure the troubled minds of Gotham criminally insane. By Night he is Batman dedicated to capturing said criminals to be incarcerated and hopefully cured. Howevere a new menace the Joker is a major challenge and also there is another Dr at the Asylum, a Johnathan Crane who has different, frightening ideas about patient care.

Batman: Secrets (2006)
1 - 5
In this story Batman faces off against his deadliest adversary, The Joker, after the Clown Price of Crime commits a heinous act that shows how heroes are treated by the media and viewed by the public.
Brave and the Bold Vol 1
109, 127, 143, 148, 152, 156, 161, 178, 180, 181, 182, 183, 184, 185, 186, 187, 189, 190
Who doesn't love a team-up title? Batman, Spider-Man and The Thing all had great team-up books and you gotta love that format, normally self contained tales featuring heroes that didn't normally team up together that much. Amongst these comics are 2 of the oldest that I bought at the time they hit the stands. The one pictured here from March 1979 when I was 9, and #156 from November the same year when I was into double figures with my age. Damn that was an age ago, I wish I could go back sometimes with the knowlege I have now!! Not really though as that is too much like a Twilight Zone or House of Mystery comic story to be comfortable!! On a side note, I never could work out why there was a comic with a Christmas story in it with a March cover date!!
Batman - Bane (1997)
Bane aided by the League of Assassins has charge of a ship which is a mobile nuclear plant and plans to crash it into Gotham Harbor causing terrible irradiation to the area unless his demands are met. Of course the only things he gets to meet are the fists and feet of Batman, Nightwing & Robin.
This issue was released as one of four one-shot graphic novels to coincide with the release of the 1997 Batman and Robin movie. The covers to all four issues interlock to form one composite image in the order (from left to right): this issue; Batman: Batgirl; Batman: Mr. Freeze and Batman: Poison Ivy.

The covers to all four issues interlock to form one composite image in the order (from left to right): this issue; Batman: Batgirl; Batman: Mr. Freeze and Batman: Poison Ivy.
Batman - Poison Ivy (1997)
Poison Ivy has gone into seclusion on an island off the coast of Nicuragua and turned it into a lush place of beautiful flora and vegetation. Her idyllic isle is destroyed though by Russian mercenaries testing a new incendiary gel. With her paradise lost Ivy puts it down to being "Just one of those things" and forgets all about it..... nah not really she hunts all those responsible down like an avenging Angel of Death and visits horrible death unto them. This naturally causes her to clash with the Batman.
Batman - Two-Face (1995)
This book is one of two Prestige Format one-shots published to coincide with the release of the film, Batman Forever. The other book is Batman: Riddler. In this deep look into the duality and clash of personalities in Two-Face's psyche we get to learn some of Harvey Dent's sad history as he kidnaps his father and considers murdering him as his 2 sides argue right and wrong and what is fair or unfair in life to each other.
Batman - Mr Freeze (1997)
Another of the 4 books released to co-incide with the movie Batman & Robin. I can't find a synopsis for this but I'm sure the comic is probably better than the movie haha you have to love Arnie in this film though lol
Batman - Batgirl (1997)
With Batman out of town Batgirl has to tangle with one of Gotham's most dangerous crazies, The Joker.
A tie-in to the Batman Forever movie
No synopsis on this book on the wiki but if memory serves me The Riddler manages to get some big league strange power and sets up a killer arena where creatures from across the Universe and different dimensions are meant to battle to the death. Dredd and Batman are "contestants" but obviously they make their own rules and manage to foil the villain's schemes.
Batman/Judge Dredd: Vendetta in Gotham (1993)
Dredd travels through dimensions to come to Gotham to fight Batman as revenge for their previous meeting. They have a slabdragger of a fight but Bruce twigs that Dredd is just trying to distract him from something else. It turns out the Mega-City One Psi-division have prophesied that Batman will one day save the city as long as he isn't killed on this night fighting against a bomb plot hatched by The Ventriloquist and Scarface. Discovering the truth Batman risks death to go to the rescue.
Batman/Spawn: War Devil (1994)
Spawn/Batman (1994)
Two crossover books here between the properties of DC & Image comics as Batman and Spawn team up.
Punisher/Batman (1994)
Batman/Punisher (1994)
Two cross company team-ups with Marvel's Punisher the deadly vigilante teaming up with two different Batmen. Jean-Paul Valley Azrael/Batman shares Frank Castle's deadly out look on criminals but when the original Bats Bruce Wayne teams up with him their different philosophies on the sanctity of life brings them into conflict.
Batman/Spider-Man (1997)
Spider-Man/Batman (1995)
Two of their individual companies greatest heroic Icons team-up to fight crime. In the earlier of the 2 books they face off against a team of Joker and Carnage!!
Batman: No Man's Land (1999)
It is stated that it has been 93 days since Gotham was declared No Man's Land; meaning the events of the story take place three months after the events of Detective Comics #729.
After the cataclysmic earthquake Gotham is declared off limits, a no man's land and that it is no longer a part of the USA! The military block the bridges allowing no one in or out, not even a priest trying to provide food relief. The released inmates of Arkham and the remaining police force are vying for Gotham turf, creating their own fiefdoms and laws. An illegal food drop lands and we see the tales of 3 people who manage to pick up items taken from it. This is the first story on the No Man's Land storyline. The story continues in Batman: Shadow of the Bat #83.
Batman: Day of Judgement (1999)
As if Gotham and the Bat family never had enough on their plates with No Man's Land, the Judgement Day begins and dead gangsters from Gotham's dark past resurrect and try to take the city.
Batman 80-Page Giant #1 (Aug 1998)
I like these kind of books; short stories from seven of the many characters that make up Gotham city's varied cast.
Batman: Blackgate Isle of Men (1998)
The earthquake that makes a No Man's Land out of Gotham does a number on Blackgate prison where the sane criminals (yes there are some!!) of Gotham go to do their time. A man on death row about to be executed does his best to save a nun and a lawyer through the chaos of the quake and the subsequent tidal wave and aftershocks. KGBeast goes on a killing spree taking out guards and threatening this story's protagonist. Batman of course makes an appearance to try and bring some order to the chaos.
Batman: Huntress/Spoiler (1998)
After the quake hits Spoiler and Huntress are going about their heroic business. Stephanie (Spoiler) Brown is helping at a mall, helping the injured and stopping looters. Huntress (Helena Bertinelli) joins her there, she is in pursuit of a group of criminals who have escaped Blackgate in the chaos of the quake. The escaped group just happen to be led by Stephanie's Father Cluemaster, the man she became Spoiler to thwart in the first place, her alter-ego was born to foul up his criminal endeavours.
Batman: Book of the Dead (1999)
Book One & Two
There is no synopsis on the DC wiki and I can't be fussed to search as this is taking all day as it is, for maybe 3 people who will read it!! This is an Elseworlds book and you can see it has some kind of Egyptian theme, I think it may have to do with the Gods, with a Batgod being discovered. I think there some Archeological themes as well to the story, with a dig finding artifacts that lead to the discovery/theory of an ancient Batgod who's believe was lost to history.
Batman: Masque
Another Elseworlds literary influenced tale this one as this story takes the Batman mythos and loosely combines it with Gaston Leroux's novel, The Phantom of the Opera. With Two-Face playing the part of the Phantom. It also touches on Poe as the play the leading lady is starring in is a production of the Masque of the Red Death story that he wrote. It's also a great film with Vincent Price as well.
Batman/Danger Girl (2005)
I can't say that I know anything about Danger Girl but I think Danger Man (Patrick McGoohan) may be her dad and Danger Mouse might be her husband but don't quote me on that!!
Batman: Room Full of Strangers (2004)
Again no information on the wiki and I don't have time to read it right now.
Batman Chronicles: The Gauntlet
In this tale of Gotham's past Dick Grayson, Robin is undergoing one final test from Batman to see if he has what it takes to fight crime beside him in his city. Dick runs the gauntlet going out for the 1st time alone in his costume, with Batman hunting him down, Robin has to elude his mentor until dawn to pass the test. Along the way he gets involved in some of Gotham's criminal underbelly and takes down a Gotham Organised Crime syndicate.
Batman/Phantom Stranger (1997)
The most mysterious man in Gotham meets the most mysterious being in the universe in order to solve the mystery of a missing civilization.
Batman: The Long Halloween (1996 - 97)
1 - 13
Set early in Batman's career a few months after the events of Year One, the story revolves around the gradual transition of Batman's rogues' gallery from simple mob goons to full-fledged supervillains.
Legends of the Dark Knight Halloween Special
No 1
Madness
Ghosts
Who doesn't love a Halloween horror tale? Boring people who smell of wee that's who!!
Batman: Secret Files and Origins #1 (1997)
It's another of those excellent books chock full of short stories from the cast of superb Gotham City characters.
Batman: Bane of the Demon (1998)
1 - 4
Bane returns to Santa Prisca the island where he was imprisoned from birth to adulthood to seek out his father, a man he has never known. His search leads to him seeking out the Order of St Dumas the organisation behind Azrael, he crosses paths with the Demon's Head and Bane and Ra's Al Ghul team-up!! A marriage made in hell surely and of course Batman is on hand to break-up the criminal couple!
Batman Mitefall (1995)
In the aftermath of Bane bombing Arkham, escapee Bob Overdog, decides to fight crime as Underdog, but fails miserably as he is a lunatic not a trained fighter, he gets beaten and has LSD stuffed down his throat. So he's a possibly concussed lunatic, under the influence of some powerful drugs and then Batmite shows up seeking him help from his enemy Bane-mite!!
Just Imagine Stan Lee's Batman (2001)
In a cool concept DC comics got Marvel visionary and Icon Stan "The Man" Lee to reimagine some classic DC characters if he had created them. The man behind pretty much all the greats over at that other company created his own versions of Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman and the Green Lantern.
Arkham Asylum: Living Hell (2003)
1 - 6
A white collar criminal foolishly tries to avoid prison by copping an insanity plea. Apparently no one in Gotham ever does that, the reason being that Arkham is the worst place on Earth for a sane person to be, with the inmates all targeting the new fish for special treatment. If he wasn't mad before he'll be hard pressed to hold on to his sanity after the events of this 6 issue arc.
Batman Plus Arsenal (1997)
Batman is used to working with a junior partner of course with Robin and Arsenal was once known as Speedy when he accompanied Green Arrow on his crime fighting missions, but for this comic the pair team-up together. I don't know if it's their 1st time working together one on one, there's no synopsis on the Wiki, but looking at this cover of the pair plummeting out of a burning plane I am sure they had a wonderful time!! I also wonder if this might be a sidekick swap weekend and that Green Arrow and Robin are off out fighting other crimes somewhere else!
Batman: Killing Joke
If you don't know this book already then perhaps you are new to comics, this is a stonewall classic of the genre, a pinnacle in the Bat-book world. No spoilers just in case you are new to this comic reading lark, but do check this out soon. It's a good un for sure.
Batman Dark Knight Gallery 1 (1996)
I don't remember this book, I guess it's just a bunch of pictures, maybe some covers from the long running Legends title.
Batgirl: Year One (2003)
1 - 9
The Year One retelling/reimagining of heroes early days is quite a popular thing in comics now it seems and it's a pretty cool idea, especially when some characters origins were 1st laid down decades ago , so it's cool to update them. Batgirl, (Barbara Gordon) had possibly been Oracle longer than she'd ever been Batgirl at this time but in many people'sminds she'd always be their Batgirl and I think she is Batgirl again or possibly Batwoman in the Rebirth DC world. Hang on who is Kate Kane then, isn't she Batwoman and Stephanie Brown is now Batgirl...
Batman: Gotham Nights (1992)
1 - 4
Batman: Gotham Nights II (1995)
1 - 4
Batman: Scar of the Bat (1996)
This Elseworlds Bat-tale is set in the prohibition area of America, the 20's I think, with Batman being the alter-ego of Eliot Ness of the FBI dedicated to take down the gangsters.
Batman: The Ultimate Evil
Book One, Two
No synopsis up on the Wiki which surprises me as this was quite a deep story about that most hideous of crime, traficking children for sex. The writer of this story Vachss was an attorney specializing in child abuse cases, as well as a crime novelist best known for his series of books featuring the character Burke, a private investigator who also takes on child abuse cases. A representative from DC Comics approached Vachss about the possibility of writing a novel featuring Batman. Viewing this as an opportunity to reach a completely different audience, Vachss agreed and wrote a draft. He continued with his themes concerning child sexual abuse and explored the topic of child sex tourism.
Batman: Two-Face Strikes Twice!
Book One, Two
I got a bit confused with these books, but each book had 2 stories in it and I believe you flipped them over to read from either side, so that's what had me scratching my head in the video. I think 1 story was set in the past and the other in the present but they were either a retelling of the same story or the latter set one was a sequel to the older story. I think it might have had to do with the giant pennny that Batman has in the Batcave.
Batman/Man-Bat (1995)
1 - 3
Another Elseworlds tale but no synopsis, I think this might be about Man-Bat, Kirk Langstrom and his wife and a family that they start, two kids, boys I think, or was it just one. It's been a while but I'm pretty sure it was Kirk and family trying to find a safe place for themselves in the world.
Batman: City of Light (2003 - 04)
1 - 8
City of Light is a Batman storyline written by Arnold Pander, Jacob Pander, and Mark Paniccia, with illustrations by the Pander brothers. It was published as an eight issue mini-series. The story deals with a mad architect redesigning Gotham to eliminate crime. I am pretty sure crime can still be commited in the light but I suppose it was worth a try!
Batman/Catwoman: Trail of the Gun
1, 2
Catwoman is accused of murder using a 'smart gun' that fires heat seeking bullets that never miss. She woke up in a room full of dead people with no memory of what transpired but some evidence seems to point to her being the culprit. She teams up with Batman to seek the truyh and to get the deadly gun out of circulation before anyone can reverse engineer and mass-produce it.
Batman/Hellboy/Starman
Book One & Two
After the retired Golden Age Starman (Ted Knight) is kidnapped by neo-Nazis superpowered skinheads Batman and Hellboy team up to try and rescue him. The Nazi leader escapes with his prisoner and Ted's son Jack the new Starman joins them to try and rescue his father. They travel to the Amazon rainforest where they are using Ted Knight's scientific knowlege to try and awaken an Elder God, Sugger Yogeroth.
Batman/Scarecrow: 3D (1998)
If you want to know what Scarecrow's fear gas hallucinations look like pop on your 3D glasses and start reading this book.
Tangent Comics: Batman #1 (1998)
This was a series of reimaginings of characters where they just keep the name but the whole origin, powers etc are completely reinvented. This tale by Dan Jurgens has Batman as Sir William from around the Knights of Camelot time. He was tricked into betraying King Arthur and is held captive in Castle Bat until he does enough good deeds to earn his release. To this end he sends out a magical suit of armour to do good deeds. He is still locked in there in modern day London sending out his armour to do good deeds.
Batman/Aliens
Book One & Two
Batman...
Aliens...

Aliens...

Batman: Seduction of the Gun #1 (1993)
This is an anti-gun story, I can't find the synopsis on any wiki anywhere but I think it focused on guns in schools and the shootings that go on there. I am so glad we don't have guns much here in the UK, yeah we have knife crime but they are less deadly than a gun for sure. In summary guns are bad, stop making so many and definately stop shooting people with them.
Batman: Vengeance of Bane II - The Redemption (1995)
After getting beaten by Az-Bats Bane gets out of shape in Blackgate and is psychologically broken himself and also going cold turkey from the Venom he's lived on for so long. This is the story of his rehabilitation, it would quite life affirming and positive if he wasn't a brutal murdering beast.
Batman Forever
Comic adaptation of the movie obviously!
Batman/Demon
I can't see a synopsis anywhere but I am guessing that Batman goes to Hell with Etrigan for some reason
Batman: Castle of the Bat
This Elseworlds tale is a pastiche of Mary Shelly's Frankenstein.
Man-Bat (1996)
1 - 3
After being in the wilds for some time Man-bat returns to Gotham as his human side wants to see his wife Francine. It's most unfortunate that he returns just as another flying monster happens to be in town commiting murders. SWAT teams target him and he is injured, seeking shelter in the sewers he is nursed back to health by Killer Croc. Man-Bat later rescues his wife from the flying killer before fleeing into the woods once again.
Batman: Death of Innocents (1996)
A tale focusing on the very real terror of land mines, many of them active years after the conflicts in which they were planted. I seem to recall there being a ton of bleak related facts about them. Most of them made in the US and UK I think and spread in war zones all over the World but mostly they maim and kill non-combatants who just happen to walk in the wrong place years after the wars have finished. These bloody things don't really have an off switch after all. Heavy stuff.
Batman: The Last Angel (1994)
Again I can't find a synopsis but it's an Elseworlds with Batman and Catwoman, apparently according to The Crisis on Infinite Earths: The Compendium this story takes place on Earth-Thirty-Two which it also stated was part of hypertime.
Batman: The Hill #1 (2000)
Following an incident on the Hill, a predominantly black area of Gotham, James Gordon is heavily criticised by the press for his inability to maintain law and order there. Batman also finds it difficult to have any effect there, as the people (particularly Korlee, the prime mover and shaker in the Hill's criminal world) do not believe that he exists in any meaningful way. Working separately, they are able to bring Korlee down, but cannot help but feel as though they have failed the Hill. He is not introduced in this book but the later hero, member of the Bat-Family who is associated with this area of Gotham is named Orpheus (Gavin King).
Batman: Reign of Terror (1998)
Captain Bruce Wayne becomes the rogue masked defender of the innocent by night, battling the very revolution he defends by day. This sweeping adventure pits a dashing Dark Knight against the war-scarred political mastermind Herve Deinte and the world's most frightening weapon: The Blade of Death! (That will be the guillotine I guess)
Batman: Jazz (1995)
1 - 3
I can't find a synopsis again but I recall this is about Jazz music after a fashion with some villains who play Jazz music I think. They might be a trio of crooks, with like a saxophone and trumpets. It's been a long time since I read it but it was a strange read.
Batman: GCPD (1996)
1 - 4
Batman: Gordon's Law (1996 - 97)
1 - 4
Batman: Gordon of Gotham (1998)
1 - 4
Bullock's Law (1999)
A big bunch of Gotham PD related mini-series there, I guess these were the precursor of the eventually well regarded on-going series Gotham Central, that ran for about 40 issues. I can't remember if I actually collected that one now.
Batman versus Predator (1991 - 92)
1 - 3
Batman versus Predator II (1993 - 94)
1 - 4
Batman versus Predator III (1997 - 98)
1 - 4
Batman....

Batman: Harley and Ivy (2004)
1 - 3
This was only a 3-part series based on the characters from the DC animated universe.
Batman/Wildcat (1997)
1 - 3
Wildcat of the old Justice Society of America taught most of the up and coming vigilantes over the years, including Batman.
Batman: Black and White (1996)
1 - 4
It's Batman in all his glory except in Black and Whire, I don't know how this comic got greenlit but it proved popular with an eventual ongoing title I think. I looked it up, there have been 4 volumes of this book now with one running to almost 50 issues.
Batman/Toyman (1998 - 99)
1 - 4
The Toy Man kind of seems like he should be a Bat Villain as Superman is way too powerful for him to take on really I think but with all his robot gadgets he can be a real challenge for Batman.
Batman/Grendel
Devil's Bones
Devil's Dance
Matt Wagner's character Grendel meets up with Batman, I can't remember it too well but I think Grendel is a villain, an assassin perhaps. Grendel is a long-running series of comic books originally created by American author Matt Wagner. First published by Comico, Wagner later moved publication of the series to Dark Horse. Originally a noir comic in the style of European titles such as Diabolik, it has evolved into, in Wagner's words, a study of the nature of aggression. In 2009, Hunter Rose (the first Grendel) was ranked as IGN's 88th Greatest Villain of All Time
The Batman Adventures (1993)
8, 10 - 13
My copy, looks like spine roll but that is another book behind it! |
I kept seeing posts of these books up and people saying that they are very pricey books, I had no idea but I thought I had a copy of this in my collection and here it is. It's in pretty good nick apart from a tiny bit of ticking around the bottom staple, such a shame haha with this and Mad Love below I had the dollar signs blinking in my eyes!!
64-Page Special: Mad Love
A very early appearance of Harley Quinn, I wish I had bought 5 copies now lol I'd never have guessed that a couple of cartoon based comics might be the most valuable ones I own!! It's as crazy as Harley Quinn herself!!
Holiday Special #1 (1995)
This one is quite popular too I hear, it's based on the very popular Mr Freeze story, some people say it was the best story ever told starring him and showed his tragic human side.
Annual
#1 (1994)
#2 (1995)
Batman: Hollywood Knight (2001)
1 - 3
I think this is based in the real early days of the Hollywood studios, I think Batman is an actor or a stuntman or something, he's probably tangling with mob interests in the studios it wouldn't surprise me if they had a hand in the studios in the early days of Hollywood.
The Batman Strikes (2004)
